“Missing Them” THE CITY NY: Winner, Online Journalism Awards 2021 Knight Award for Public Service,
I interviewed surviving family members, conducted background research and wrote memorials for “Missing Them,” an engagement journalism initiative by THE CITY NY to write a memorial for every New Yorker lost to COVID-19. This project is deeply meaningful to me, both because it is the kind of service journalism that drove me to go to journalism school during a pandemic, and also exemplifies the kind of work that is possible when civic projects are done in collaboration with the public. Several of my memorials were featured in public art displays by Photoville and adapted into a live theater piece by the Working Theater.

“The Big Chance,” Story Pirates Podcast: Winner, 2020 and 2022 iHeartRadio awards for Best Kids and Family Podcast
I am a writer and voice actor for the Story Pirates podcast, one of the top three children’s and family podcasts in the world. I took a story written by a kid and adapted it into an audio comedy script. The kid’s original story can be read here.

When people think about saving the world, most people do not think about traffic: but they should. As a journalist who studies and writes about transportation, I want people to understand that no other issue touches every aspect of our lives - from public health, to economic mobility, to gender equality - more than the way we use our roads, and who gets to decide.
I host, edit and distribute a podcast called “Dyke On A Bike.” I interview cycling advocates, artists, activists, and workers about their vision of city streets that work for people instead of cars. I engage with my listeners through social media - and use that data to drive editorial decisions. I create original content for my Instagram followers at @DykeCycleNYC in addition to sharing resources and articles that are useful to my community. In the absence of safe cycling infrastructure, my goal is to give my podcast listeners the information they need to feel empowered to ride their bike in the city.
Although the benefits of riding a bike are well-established-and despite piecemeal projects and some improvements-cycling remains a dangerous activity in New York City.
New York City’s streets are in crisis. And to quote directly from the Vision Zero website, “making New York the world’s safest big city will require more than government policy and programs — It will take citizen action from the grassroots up.”
